#THE MISEDUCATION OF LAURYN HILL ZIP SHAREBEAST PROFESSIONAL#
A variety of professional and personal issues sent Lauryn into a reclusive state and little material has been released in the intervening years since Miseducation. Hill’s first solo album provided a sharp counterpoint by injecting the perspective of a young black woman dealing with identity and sexuality. Sadly her first studio release would also be her last. To understand the significance of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, it’s important to remember what mainstream hip-hop was like in 1998.Materialism and misogyny were rampant, fanned by music videos that presented women as objects or conquests. The neo-soul record modernized gospel music in the eye of the public, and the candor of its reflection of Hill’s reality and the perspective of a black woman was unprecedented. The album’s lyrics touch on her pregnancy as well as the tensions within the Fugees.
But shes not aiming at Wyclef or Rohan, the Marley scion with whom she birthed her. At the time, she was romantically involved with Rohan Marley, Bob’s son, and later became pregnant with his child. Its tempting to imagine The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill as an hour-plus breakup note to Wyclef Jean, her former Fugees paramour 'Lost Ones,' a scathing dis track, is obviously aimed at him. Hill recorded most of the album at Bob Marley’s Tuff Gong studios in Kingston, Jamaica. Hill later won five Grammys (including Album of the Year) for the LP.

To this day, it remains a landmark record for both hip-hop and neo-soul. It was both a critical and commercial success, shooting to number one on the Billboard 200 upon its release. After the Fugees disbanded in 1997, Lauryn Hill branched out and released her solo debut the following year.
